Focus on Realism, Portability, and Sustainability
Expanded Reach and Improved Training Efficiency
Securitas Academy, responsible for training thousands of security personnel, relied on traditional fire training methods using so called fire trucks. These systems, while very instructive, are logistically challenging, as they require a truck to be relocated to the training site. Aside from this, the trucks operations are difficult to scale, require significant maintenance and are environmentally wasteful. Live fire drills involved costs, risks, and waste from extinguishers, while static VR simulations failed to replicate the unpredictability and sensory stress of real fires. As Securitas sought to expand its training services and client base, it needed a modern, scalable, and sustainable training solution that could deliver high levels of realism without the drawbacks of physical fire exercises.
“Our old fire training lacked realism, was hard to scale, and created too much waste.”
OneBonsai developed a next-generation VR fire training platform tailored to Securitas’ needs. The system included realistic fire and smoke simulations, immersive environments, and interactive features like hand tracking and a mixed-reality fire extinguisher. Trainees could practice locating hazards, handling equipment, and extinguishing fires in a safe, controlled virtual environment. The platform was portable and instructor-led, allowing Securitas to deliver fire training sessions at multiple locations with minimal setup. Additionally, OneBonsai created a custom modified fire extinguisher that could be used in VR, resulting in a realistic, tactile experience for the students. This combination of realism and flexibility gave Securitas the ability to offer engaging and repeatable training experiences to both its own personnel and external clients.
The training module was designed in close collaboration with Securitas’ safety experts to ensure it aligned with industry standards and client expectations. Realistic fire dynamics and environmental effects created a sense of urgency and stress, helping participants better prepare for real emergencies. The VR system was eventually used in conjunction to Securitas’ traditional fire extinguisher exercises, effectively increasing their market reach. Its portable design meant the system could be used at all client sites, increasing reach and efficiency. By integrating realism, sustainability, and mobility, OneBonsai built a solution that modernized Securitas’ fire training offering.
“While I know VR is not real, it felt more realistic than a staged fire. The fire was in an environment that makes sense.”
The VR Fire Training program delivered strong results for Securitas. Within months of deployment, the system helped expand their client base by 30%, while also replacing 20% of traditional fire training sessions with the more sustainable VR version. Trainees reported higher engagement, better retention of safety procedures, and greater confidence in handling fire emergencies. By adopting this innovative solution, Securitas reduced environmental impact, increased operational efficiency, and strengthened its market position as a forward-thinking provider of safety training. The project redefined fire safety education for Securitas, turning it into a scalable, eco-friendly, and highly impactful service.
