Safe Mooring Training
VR - Project
We build this project together with the input from industry experts in a record time of 2 months. They supplied their content for the Virtual Reality experience in a very fast and efficient way. They plan to use this experience for 4 years during interactive sessions of their safety days across Belgium.
Mooring is high-risk, complex, and hard to train safely with traditional methods.
OneBonsai created a VR Mooring Training module that simulates real operations and hazards without risk.
The training provides guided practice, hazard spotting, repetition, and performance review.
It improved safety awareness, reduced incidents, and made training scalable across maritime organizations.
Thanks to this training, they get the experience of the real thing, but without the accompanying danger. And the reactions? Everyone is super enthusiastic!
Challenge
Mooring is one of the most critical yet hazardous maritime operations, as improper execution can cause vessel drift, collisions, environmental damage, or even loss of life. Despite its importance, training sailors for mooring remains extremely difficult: traditional classroom instruction lacks realism, while hands-on practice exposes trainees to serious risks such as snapback zones and equipment failures. The complexity of handling different ship types, ropes, and winches, combined with limited opportunities for safe real-world drills, leaves many crew members underprepared.
Solution
To address these challenges, OneBonsai developed a Virtual Reality Mooring Training Module that replicates real-world conditions in a safe, controlled environment. The solution immerses trainees in lifelike mooring scenarios where they can practice every step of the process from PPE preparation and rope handling to bollard attachment and hazard spotting without any physical danger. The VR system not only detects mistakes in real time but also allows for unlimited practice and unguided exam simulations, enabling sailors to build confidence and competence at their own pace. Integrated performance tracking and after-action reviews further enhance learning outcomes, making the training scalable across fleets and ports while reducing costs, logistics, and risks.
