It’s no secret that the military is one of the main drivers of technological advancement. Many argue that without the military we would not have the internet and aviation would be far more rudimentary.

Militaries around the world are demonstrating a keen interest in Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality to better protect their borders and improve their efficiency. At times the lines between consumer tech and military hardware blurs and this will continue to be the case as these technologies develop.

How Might AR Affect the Defense Industry?

Many of us have seen the movies and video games that include futuristic military personnel of the future using advanced technology to aid in their fight against their enemy.

While at one time many of these appearances were reserved for the realm of science fiction, reality is beginning to catch up. Large portions of military budgets are set aside for technologists to pursue research and development.

Heads-Up Displays

These AR displays can be incorporated into a military person’s helmet or eye gear so that they can receive additional information and insight. The locations of colleagues, strategic objectives or any other vital information can be flagged up clearly to aid in communication and orientation.

Strategic Planning

Getting a view of a battlefield or target area is a difficult task. Augmented Reality will permit military personnel to get a full picture of the areas which can be viewed in three dimensions and manipulated. This can help in the development of plans and strategies and any changes could be marked and relayed to the HUD’s of military personnel in real-time.

Better Decision Making

Military members often have just split seconds to make decisions in critical situations. Cognitive Load affects people in crisis situations when there is too much information and a lack of clarity. AR could eventually be used to combat Cognitive Load and help military personnel to make the right choices and keep themselves safe.
